Most of New York’s centuries-old neighborhoods predate the automobile, and so are built on a walkable scale. That’s why you can get to know a neighborhood on foot, often within walking distance of a single subway stop. And we’ll show you how.

The Beyond Manhattan Blog gives you two ways to explore NYC’s outer boroughs. The first is Explore By Neighborhood.

This option is great for first or second-time visitors to the city who want to take the subway to a single stop and have a working rolodex of good options within walking distance of that stop. For every neighborhood, you can read an overview of the area, its history, and what makes it unique and worth visiting, a guide for the best way to get there from Manhattan, a category for eateries and coffee shops we recommend, and a category for pubs, nightlife, and other features.

Explore By Category

If you’re more experienced or adventurous, you can also browse by category. Say you’re in the mood for Thai food (no, not American Thai Food, real Thai food), or want to experience the quintessence of Third Wave coffee. Just click on the category, and read the reviews for our recommendations. Posts are cross-referenced, so can start by looking for the best burrito,  then click on the neighborhood category for the place you want to visit to browse other features in that neighborhood and make a day out of it. Finally, if you’re a local and want to keep up with the latest reviews, you can simply read the posts chronologically in the blog.
